Mullien Leaf

Mullein leaf has a long history of use in traditional European and Middle Eastern herbal medicine, dating back thousands of years. Ancient Greeks and Romans used it for respiratory issues, burns, and skin conditions, while its tall, torch-like stalks were sometimes dipped in tallow and used as makeshift lanterns—giving the plant its nickname, “torch plant.” In medieval times, mullein was a common household remedy for coughs, congestion, and inflammation. Native American tribes also adopted it for lung health and soothing teas. Today, mullein remains a widely respected herb known for its gentle, healing properties and enduring place in folk medicine.

Mullein leaf is widely used for supporting respiratory health, helping to soothe the lungs and clear congestion with its natural expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can ease coughing, loosen mucus, and promote smoother breathing during colds or seasonal irritation. Mullein also has calming, antimicrobial effects that support overall lung comfort and immune health. Overall, it’s a gentle yet effective herb for maintaining clear, healthy airways.

To prepare mullein leaf, bring a cup of water to a gentle boil and add 1–2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaves. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat and steep for another 5–10 minutes. Strain the tea through a fine mesh strainer or cloth to catch the tiny hairs, which can irritate the throat. Sweeten or add lemon if desired, and drink warm for best results.
