Sarsaparilla

Sarsaparilla refers to a group of trailing or climbing plants from the Smilax genus, native to tropical and subtropical parts of the world, particularly Central and South America. It’s important to distinguish this from the unrelated “wild sarsaparilla” (Aralia nudicaulis) of North America, which has different properties.
For centuries, the root of the sarsaparilla plant has been a cornerstone of traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various indigenous healing practices in the Americas.

Modern science has begun to investigate the traditional claims, with promising but often preliminary results. Many of the potential benefits are linked to the root’s rich phytochemical profile, which includes saponins (like sarsasapogenin and smilagenin), flavonoids, plant sterols, and antioxidants.
1. Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties
Sarsaparilla contains powerful antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals. Its anti-inflammatory properties are believed to be behind its traditional use for skin conditions and joint pain. Some studies suggest it can inhibit inflammatory markers in the body.

2. Skin Health, Particularly Psoriasis
This is one of the most well-documented modern uses. Compounds in sarsaparilla are thought to bind to endotoxins (harmful substances released by bacteria in the gut) that can exacerbate psoriasis flare-ups. By binding to these endotoxins, sarsaparilla may help remove them from the body and reduce inflammation in the skin.

3. Arthritis and Joint Pain
Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, sarsaparilla is still used today as a complementary therapy for rheumatic conditions like osteoarthritis and gout. It may help reduce pain and improve mobility.

4. Potential Liver Protection
Some animal studies have indicated that sarsaparilla extract may have a hepatoprotective effect, helping to shield the liver from damage caused by toxins. This aligns with its historical use as a “blood purifier.”

5. Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity
Test-tube studies have shown that sarsaparilla extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. This supports its historical use for treating wounds, sores, and minor infections, though it is not a substitute for modern antibiotics for serious infections.

5. Nutrient Absorption
The saponins in sarsaparilla may improve the absorption of other nutrients and drugs. For example, it was historically combined with other herbs to enhance their effectiveness.

Herbal Tea/Decoction: The most traditional method. Dried roots are simmered in water to make a strong tea.
Tinctures and Liquid Extracts: Concentrated forms where the herb is extracted in alcohol or glycerin. These are popular for medicinal use.

Powdered Root and Capsules: A convenient way to take a standardized dose.

Modern Root Beer: It’s important to note that most commercial root beers today are flavored with artificial sassafras or wintergreen substitutes, not real sarsaparilla. However, you can find authentic, craft root beers that still use it.
