Yellow / Gold Seamoss

Seamoss is a common name for several species of red algae, most notably Chondrus crispus (Irish Moss) and Genus Gracilaria. It grows in cooler Atlantic waters along the rocky coasts of Europe, North America, and the Caribbean.
For centuries, it has been a traditional food in Ireland (hence “Irish Moss”) and Jamaica, where it’s often made into a gel or added to drinks and desserts for its health benefits and thickening properties.

The primary benefit of seamoss is its astounding mineral and vitamin content. It is often touted as containing 92 of the 102 minerals the human body needs (though this specific number is debated and can vary based on the water it’s grown in). Its health benefits are largely attributed to this broad-spectrum mineral profile, along with other compounds.
Key components include:

Iodine: Critical for thyroid function.

Iron, Zinc, & Magnesium: Essential for energy, immunity, and hundreds of biochemical reactions.

Calcium & Phosphorus: Vital for bone health.

Sulfur: Important for skin, joints, and detoxification.

Potassium: An essential electrolyte.

Carrageenan: A soluble fiber that gives it gelling properties.

Taurine & Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Support cardiovascular and brain health.

1. Thyroid Support
Seamoss is a rich, natural source of iodine, a mineral absolutely essential for the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). These hormones regulate metabolism, energy, body temperature, and growth.

Caution: The iodine content can be extremely high and variable. While beneficial for those with deficiency, it can be problematic for people with thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s or hyperthyroidism.

2. Digestive Health and Gut Soothing
The carrageenan in raw, whole-food seamoss (distinct from the isolated, processed carrageenan used in the food industry) acts as a prebiotic soluble fiber.

Prebiotic: It feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Demulcent: It forms a soothing film over mucous membranes, which can help relieve inflammation in the gut and soothe an upset stomach, gastritis, and ulcers.

3. Immune System Support
The dense concentration of vitamins (A, C, E, K) and minerals, particularly iron and zinc, provides foundational support for a robust immune system. Zinc is especially crucial for the normal development and function of immune cells.

4. Energy and Muscle Recovery
The high levels of iron, magnesium, potassium, and B-vitamins make seamoss a potent natural energy booster. Iron helps combat anemia-related fatigue, while magnesium and potassium are crucial for proper muscle function and recovery after exercise, preventing cramps.

5. Skin, Hair, and Nail Health
The sulfur, vitamin A, and omega-3s in seamoss are building blocks for healthy skin and connective tissues. Sulfur, in particular, is known as “the beauty mineral” for its role in collagen and keratin production, leading to stronger nails, thicker hair, and more elastic skin.

6. Respiratory Health
Its traditional use as a respiratory aid is linked to its demulcent properties. The gel can coat the throat, providing relief from irritation and dry cough.

Seamoss Gel:
Rinse and soak dried raw seamoss for 12-24 hours until it expands and softens.

Blend the soaked seamoss with fresh water until completely smooth.

It will thicken into a gel in the refrigerator, lasting 2-3 weeks.

Uses for the Gel:

Add 1-2 tablespoons daily to smoothies, teas, soups, sauces, or desserts as a nutrient booster and thickener.

Use as a face mask for glowing skin.
